How To Audition

Milford Youth Theater wants you to be successful. We know auditions can be scary, especially for new and young performers! Here are some tips to shake those nerves!

  • START YOUR AUDITION by stating your full name and age.
  • SPEAK CLEARLY in a loud, confident voice.
  • BE PREPARED. If you’re singing a song or reading a monologue, have it memorized. It shows your dedication and willingness to prepare on your own.
  • MAKE EYE CONTACT. It’s much easier to connect with the directors behind the table (and for them to connect with you) if you look at them. We’re nice, we promise.
  • When you’re reading your monologue or audition scenes, MAKE A CHARACTER CHOICE. The only wrong choice is no choice!
  • GET INTO THE ROLE. Our team will see over one hundred kids during audition rounds, try to make an impression!
  • BE OPEN TO TRYING NEW THINGS. The director may ask you to read for something unexpected. Always say yes and be open minded.
  • Don’t try to guess what the director is thinking, that could make you nervous! All MYT directors do their best to make the environment as welcoming and encouraging as possible.
  • Don’t forget to BREATHE. When in doubt, close your eyes, take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. You got this!
  • Remember that you’re telling a story. Be innovative, creative, and inspiring, know that the audience eagerly awaits your words and expressions.
  • BONUS TIP… Have Fun!!!
